Why So Cru?

800 University Ave Berkeley

Wine Bar Design

Cru is a new wine bar for the locals in Berkeley who want to have a rare French wine bar experience with a modern twist. A luxury U-shaped bar paired with monochromatic walls and paneling and the contrasting black ceiling and accents give the space a moody yet approachable appeal. At first glance seating is placed towards the storefront and at bar-height tables along the perimeter of the space, but can easily be transitioned into a layout that allows for classes or tastings. The cellar is a clever method to highlight the wall while also making it simple to access the wine bottles which like the furniture provides a mix of aesthetic and functionality. Another big design aspect is the lighting in the space. The layering of the light illuminates the space while also providing moments of warmth and intimacy like the neon sign on the wall or the lighting underneath the bar's toe kick. This space is all about duality, customers can assure they will always enjoy their glass of wine whether they come alone or with company.
